Crossing
the Forth Bridge into the 'kingdom' of Fife, we travel along the East
Neuk through fishing villages and harbour's, once thriving on the continental
trade. We arrive at St. Andrews, famous for its ecclesiastical past, its oldest
of universities and as the hallowed capital of golf. See the sites, have lunch
and stroll along the beach, among the ruins or through the lanes for two hours
or more.
Our
afternoon takes us to Falkland, another charming village dominated by its
16th century palace. Its Renaissance facades are the earliest in Britain,
its gardens a delight, and its tennis court the oldest (still in use) in Europe.
Heading homeward we traverse the heart of the Lomond Hills, descending to
Loach Leven (scene of Mary Stewart's imprisonment) and on to Edinburgh. |
